The Life And Works of Aristotle When Plato died in 347 bc, Aristotle moved to Assos, a city in Asia Minor, where a friend of his, Hermias (died 345 bc), was ruler. There he counseled Hermias and married his niece and adopted daughter, Pythias. After Hermias was captured and executed by the Persians, Aristotle went to Pella, the Macedonian capital, where he became the tutor of the king's young son Alexander, later known as Alexander the Great. In 335, when Alexander became king, Aristotle returned to Athens and established his own school, the Lyceum. Because much of the discussion in his school took place while teachers and students were walking about the Lyceum grounds, Aristotle's school came to be known as the Peripatetic ('walking' or 'strolling') school. Upon the death of Alexander in 323 bc, strong anti-Macedonian feeling developed in Athens, and Aristotle retired to a family estate in Euboea. The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault

The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault Although much lesser known than his literary heirs the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen, 17th-century French writer, Charles Perrault, not only solidified the fairy tale as a literary genre but wrote nearly all of the genres most signature stories, including Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, Bluebeard, Puss in Boots, Tom Thumb, and the larger designation of Mother Goose stories. Perrault published his Stories or Tales from Times Past (subtitled Mother Goose Tales) in 1697 and arrived at the end of a long and not entirely satisfying literary life. Perrault was nearly 70 years old and, while he was well-connected, his contributions had been more intellectual than artistic. But this slim volume comprised of three of his earlier verse stories and eight new prose stories achieved a success that hadnt seemed possible to the man whod long made his main living as a civil servant.   Impact on Literature   Some of Perraults stories were adapted from oral tradition, some were inspired by episodes from earlier works, (including Boccaccios The Decameron and Apuleius The Golden Ass), and some were inventions wholly new to Perrault. What was most significantly new was the idea of turning magical folk tales into sophisticated and subtle forms of written literature. While we now think of fairy tales as primarily childrens literature, there was no such thing as childrens literature in Perraults time. With this in mind, we can see that the morals of these tales take on more worldly purposes, despite their slyly clever packaging within the fantastical universe of fairies, ogres, and talking animals. While Perraults original tales are hardly the versions that were fed to us as children, they also cant be expected to be the feminist and socialist alternate versions that we might wish them to be (see Angela Carters 1979 story collection, The Bloody Chamber, for this kind of modern twist; Carter had translated an edition of Perraults fairy tales in 1977 and was inspired to create her own versions as a response). Perrault was an upper-class intellectual during the reign of the Sun King. Unlike the fable-writer Jean de La Fontaine, whose rich narratives often criticized the powerful and took the side of the underdog (in fact he himself was not in favor with the megalomaniacal Louis XIV), Perrault didnt have much of an interest in rocking the boat. Instead, as a leading figure on the modern side of the Quarrel of the Ancients and the Moderns, he brought new forms and sources to literature to create something that even the ancients had never seen. La Fontaine was on the side of the ancients and wrote fables in the vein of Aesop, and while La Fontaine was much more lyrically sophisticated and intellectually clever, it was Perraults modernity that lay the foundation for a new kind of literature thats created a culture all its own. Perrault may have been writing for adults, but the fairy tales that he first put on paper spawned a revolution in what kinds of stories could be made into literature. Soon, writing for children spread throughout Europe and eventually across the rest of the world. The results and even his own works may have gone far out of Perraults intent or control, but thats what often happens when you introduce something new into the world. It seems that theres a moral somewhere in that. References in Other Works   Perraults tales entered culture in ways that far transcend his own personal artistic reach. They permeated virtually every level of modern art and entertainment- from rock songs to popular films to the most sophisticated stories by literary fabulists such as Angela Carter and Margaret Atwood. With all these tales forming a common cultural currency, the clarity and intent of the originals have often been either obscured or contorted to serve sometimes questionable meanings. And while a film like 1996s Freeway creates a brilliant and necessary twist on the Little Red Riding Hood story, many more popular versions of Perraults works (from the saccharine Disney films to the grotesquely insulting Pretty Woman) manipulate their audiences by promoting reactionary gender and class stereotypes. Much of this is in the originals, though, and its often surprising to see just what is and what isnt in the original versions of these seminal fairy tales. Tales by Perrault In Puss in Boots, the youngest of three sons inherits only a cat when his father dies, but through the cats wily scheming the young man ends up wealthy and married to a princess. Perrault, who was in favor with Louis XIV, provides two interconnected but  competing  morals to the  tale, and he clearly had the machinations of the court in mind with this witty satire. On the one hand, the tale promotes the idea of using hard work and ingenuity to get ahead, rather than just relying on your parents money. But on the other hand, the story warns against being taken in by pretenders who may have achieved their wealth in unscrupulous ways. Thus, a tale that seems like a didactic childrens fable actually serves as a double-edged send-up of class mobility as it existed in the seventeenth century. Perraults Little Red Riding Hood reads much like the popularized versions that we all grew up with, but with one big difference: the wolf eats the girl and her grandmother, and nobody comes along to save them. Without the happy ending that the Brothers Grimm supply in their version, the story serves as a warning to young women against talking to strangers, especially against charming wolves who seem civilized but are perhaps even more dangerous. Theres no heroic male to slay the wolf and save Little Red Riding Hood from her own gullible innocence. Theres only danger, and its up to young women to learn how to recognize it. Like Puss in Boots, Perraults Cinderella also has two competing and contradictory morals, and they likewise discuss questions of marriageability and class connection. One moral claims that charm is more important than looks when it comes to winning a mans heart, an idea that suggests that anyone can achieve happiness, regardless of their conventional assets. But the second moral declares that no matter what natural gifts you have, you need a godfather or godmother in order to put them to good use. This message acknowledges, and perhaps supports, societys profoundly uneven playing field. The most strange and amazing of Perraults tales, Donkey Skin, is also one of his least known, probably because its shocking grotesqueries have no way of being watered down and made easily palatable. In the story, a dying queen asks her husband to remarry after her death, but only to a princess even more beautiful than her. Eventually, the kings own daughter grows to surpass her dead mothers beauty, and the king falls deeply in love with her. At the suggestion of her fairy godmother, the princess makes seemingly impossible demands of the king in exchange for her hand, and the king somehow fulfills her demands each time to both shimmering and terrifying effect. Then she demands the skin of the kings magic donkey, which defecates gold coins and is the source of the kingdoms wealth. Even this the king does, and so the princess flees, wearing the donkey skin as a permanent disguise. In Cinderella-like fashion, a young prince rescues her from her squalor and marries her, and events transpire so that her father also ends up happily paired with a neighboring widow-queen. Despite the tidiness of all its ends, this is the story that contains the messiest and wildest of Perraults invented worlds. Perhaps that is why posterity has been unable to tame it into a version that feels comfortable presenting to children. There is no Disney version, but for the adventurous, Jacques Demys 1970 film starring Catherine Deneuve manages to capture all of the storys perversity while casting the loveliest and most magical spell on its viewers.

Jim is an African American slave who escapes and joins Huck on his adventure. The river symbolises the physical journey they both take and along this journey they discover many barriers and hardships. These barriers and hardships are both emotional and physical.This is evident when Huck is torn between following society’s rules (turning Jim in) or following his heart (helping Jim escape). Huck has come to an obstacle on the journey and has to try and overcome it. He has to make a decision on which ‘path’ he will take. Huck constantly battles with trying to decide what’s wrong from right and asking himself is he doing the right thing. Even though Huck see’s Jim as a friend he still carries on society’s values of racism and prejudice. Twain uses irony and satire to show how society is stupid, racist and oblivious to how they treat others.This is seen when the reward for the capture of Jim is higher than the reward for pap. Society sees that the escape of a slave is far worse than murder. Likewise, â€Å"The Road Not Taken† also demonstrates that journeys may have barriers and hardships. The poem represents how sometimes people who are on life journeys come to a fork in the road or a decision that they have to make. The traveller wants to take both paths but he can’t. He has to weigh up his decision and go with it. Robert Frost uses the path to symbolise the journey the traveller goes on and to create and image for the reader.Repetition and punctuation is also used to create emphasis and to reinforce what has been said. As Robert Frost states ‘Oh I kept the first for another day! Adding and exclamation mark at the end of the sentence. The repetition of the word ‘and’ in the first stanza also adds emphasis. Journeys facilitate reflection about how you see yourself, others and the world. I believe that a journey gives you the opportunity to really see everything in a different light. Journeys may involve obstacles and with these difficulties peo ple experience new situations and therefore change.Whether that be physically, emotionally or psychologically. A journey also assists with the comparison of yourself, others and society. In â€Å"The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn† Huck gets to experience life on a whole new level. He learns how wrong and prejudiced his society Is and how life on the raft is far better in comparison to life on shore. This is shown when Huck is so infatuated with the freedom and care-free nature of life on a raft compared to the cruel, racist and unjust way of life on shore. As Huck states ‘you feel mighty free and easy and comfortable on a raft’.Mark Twain uses juxtaposition and again symbolism to compare and contrast the difference between life on shore vs life on the raft. Twain describes the town life as harsh, dirty and confined in comparison to the life on the shore as care-free, relaxed and independent. This highlights how good life on the raft is. The journey Huck and Jim take allows for both of them to reflect and compare life on shore in comparison to life on the raft. Huck and Jim don't have to follow society’s rules they are free and with freedom comes opportunity to explore and experience many things they normally wouldn’t get to do.In addition, â€Å"The Road Not Taken† also shows us how journeys allow for our reflection on many things. In the poem the traveller experiences an obstacle or fork in the road. This allows the traveller to take in his surroundings whether that be the path ahead or the people around him. This is shown when he states ‘two roads diverged in a yellow wood’. The traveller has two options and to make a decision he has to really explore both of them. Robert Frost uses this poem to express his belief in not always following the crowd and being an individual.Robert Frost uses conversational language to create a sense of communication between the traveller and the reader and to enlighten the reflection that the traveller has made. After comparing both paths and seeing every option his reflection about his journey changes. The traveller decides to go with the path less travelled. He decides to be different. Journeys can lead to significant personal change. The experiences you have on a journey can shape and change your perception of yourself and the people around you. In ‘The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn’ this is shown when Huck’s beliefs change and he becomes more mature.Huck and Jim’s relationship also develops throughout the journey. It don’t seem natural, but I reckon it’s so’ Huck eventually notices that Jim is in fact just the same as him. I was born in Detroit, Mi. located in the United States of America in a middle to upper middle class family in the year in 1983 which would make me 30 this November 16th. I can only speak English at the moment but Im learning Spanish. I dont really have a religious belief, Im more of a spiritual person but Ill talk more about that later. Race-Black Being of the Black skin tone has been a very unique experience I most say, compared to other skin tones of the world. I say this because many ethnic groups have my same skin tone and even darker but they all have different worldviews. As a black male that grew up in a large black populated city I can definitely attest to having a true Black race culture running deep in my character. There is a person on the other side of the world that looks exactly like me but lives by different creed, might not have any respect for me because of the country I come form and the way I may carry myself. The fact that if you put the to of us in the same room together many would pass us as brothers when really we never even seen each other before in our lives. The term black may always be very interestingly broad. Ethnicity- African American Africans became Americans is one that shows man-kind its worst. Many would say they prefer not to be referred as Africans since they know nothing of their ancestries from over 400 years ago. But with ever summer that passed the people got crazier; I noticed this when I turned 13. As soon as the as spring day would hit somebody would do something 10 times wilder, reckless, and deadlier then the last summer. Its like they were in competition with each other, but it really was Just a sign that things were getting worst. In the mist of all this was me pretty street smart because of it. Sex- Male Being a male growing up in Detroit, many would say I wasnt suppose to make it to see my twenty as many of my school never did, but I stand here blessed about to see 0 years of age. I am nothing but grateful for that because I personally know tooo many that could make it through 9th grade let alone through the twenties alive and not scorn too much by lifes trials and tribulations. I would never trade being the dominant of the sexes but as I am a wise man I know women rule the world. Detroit is a black city so thats the point of view I am most similar with, being that I have traveled a bit in my time I have much understanding of the views other males of different races and ethnicities. Class- Middle/Upper middle class I place myself in the middle to upper middle class because both my parents had uccessful business as I was growing up. My mother had a day care in our basement for 25years (until I was 15 years old), which had around 12 kids Monday- Friday. My Dad was an engineer for the board of education plus he did real estate amongst other things. I never experience lights going out or any bills not being paid in out house hold. We did go on trips in the summer but that was not the case for the rest of my surroundings. Some of my friends from back then still have never sit foot out side Detroit and dont plan on it even though the cities doing nothing but getting worst. Growing in this type of setting did make me grateful in most ways but at times it made me feel Just as poor as the other kids simply because they were my friend or that is who I saw every day, there problems were mine at times because of that. Funny thing is that this class is growing more and more in America. It makes me wonder whats to come of it, especially with a black president. Age-Young Adult To be a young adult it feels good and even better to be in college about to get a degree to make the family feel they did good and the bloodline shall thrive on. Sometimes its easy to forget how precious life is and how it can be taken away. At his time in my life I feel IVe so much and understand even more but there some much more the world has to offer me. At 30 1 understand the mistakes the late teens and twenty something year old people make and I can laugh to myself and say I did that one time or sometime because I believe I have always been a little ahead of my time I say I would have never did nothing like that. I guess being a young adult all I can do is feel blessed and know there is a reason for my existence. What that is Guess I have to keep on living to find out. Language- English At the moment I speak English but I have been in multiple French class in lementary school that I have forgotten and I am currently in a Spanish 2 class even though I dont remember what I learned in Spanish-I two to three semester ago. I know learning it will help me when I move to California next summer but I can never impacted me negatively in anyway but I know moving to California where Latinos dominant, Spanish will be more then need if I want to be able to do business with everybody. And thats exactly what I want. Religion- Other As a child I sometime went to Baptist and Methodist churches but I dont remember Joining. In fact when I became of age the only time I went to church was hen mu grandmother wanted me to go and there is no saying NO to grandma. I am a full believer in God but all the story that he never wrote himself is were my eyebrow raises. In my family and community I have seen some of the most upheld people of the church do some non-church like things but this is were I am suppose to get guidance from. The very first naw was put together because of a holy war hundreds of years ago. I am Just not sold. I believe life is what you make it, as long as you mind your business and do good to others everything will be alright. This doesnt ean sit around and say you waiting on God to send you a blessing. Life is a blessing enough in its own. I feel the spirit people talk about but in a different way. Its always kind and never Judging and it pushes and pulls us to where we need to be at any given moment in our lives. When I geta chance to tell a kid 12-18 years old something I keep it direct and raw. Just as it was passed to me through the years. Sugar coating truth of life is the worst thing we can to do when passing on our knowledge because life is not sugar coated like in the movies. This is the perception most people have in one way or another and t is hurt them a little bit more as time goes on. I tell kids that there is nothing greater then you because there is only one you and never will be another. Always (always) listen to yourself, our mentor can guide us but the choice are all ours to make. Just be happy to be alive and able no matter where you are and always do your best.
